Catalogue
All species described here are grown in the local climate (Southern Moravia, 160m above sea level) without any winter protection. Hardiness is carefully monitored for several years and evaluated into the following groups:*1 Leaves and buds withstand short periods of frost -20 to -23ºC, culms usually take even lower temperatures.
*2 Leaves and hardened culms can withstand temperatures between -16 to -18ºC,
long lasting frost can cause damage depending on sun and wind.
*3 Leaves can withstand -16ºC for a short period. During the long lasting frost culms can be damaged but usually regenerate well from the rhizomes.
Hardiness is a relative term. Young plants are more sensitive and hardiness increases with age. Large cities, buildings, trees can all create a microclimate which may positively affect winter survival. Several freezing nights with a temperature drop below -20ºC can cause less damage than the combination of long lasting frost, wind and sun at -16ºC.
